It is always easier to attend to repairs after separating the felt from the table. This makes it possible to do the repairs in a more comprehensive manner. The tool that comes in handy for this is a socket wrench. Bolts attaching the rails to the table are removed.

After removal of the rails, the staples that attach the table and the felt together are removed. This can be done using either a staple puller or screwdriver. The screwdriver used for this should have a flat head. After removing the staples, they need to be placed carefully so that they are not misplaced or do not cause injury. This would happen if they are stepped upon.

The extent of the cracks is known through inspection of the slate. Beeswax will suffice to fill the fine cracks and small chips. It should be held above the crack, some 4 inches, as the wax is melted. The melting is done using a portable propane torch. The wax is left to drip into the cracks.

Slate needs plenty of wax for it to effectively bond. After the wax cools properly, any excess ones are removed using a paint scraper. The excess wax is removed because it would leave the slate with an unpleasant appearance. Furthermore, it may have an effect on the drying of the wax within the cracks. The right quantity of wax is important so that it dries and grips the cracks well.

There is the option of using billiard table wax. This contains resin that hardens in a better way than beeswax and gives more durable results. If the cracks are big, then billiards wax will be the better option. After the application is completed and the excess wax is scraped, the slate is wiped with a damp sponge or cloth. Billiard table wax will also be effective when one has to seal loose seams on the slate.

If the cracks are more extensive, the best option to use will be slate repair glue. This has thick consistency that helps to effectively bond the slate. This is applied inside the crack on both sides. The two separate sides of the slate are pushed together firmly. They are held together for a while so that the glue bonds the separate pieces of slate.

The pressure that results from the slate being pushed together makes some glue to seep out. It ought to be left to dry. After that, it is smoothed using sandpaper. The felt is put back in position after all repairs are done.
