Find The Best Nursing Homes For Your Loved One

By Tracie Knight

It is still a running debate whether or not assisted living is good for a patient who has special needs. Over time, nursing homes have gained a negative image because people see it as a place where the elderly are dumped when no one wants them around the house anymore. While this is true in some cases, Nursing Homes in Maine are actually facilities with expert medical staff and humane caregivers that give the best possible care to its patients.

Deliberate the matter among other family members first before deciding to place an elderly into a home. First of all it is your responsibility to take care of family members, not of total strangers. One good reason is deteriorating health. If the patient can not do even simple activities such as dressing himself or herself, then it is time to consider a skilled facility.

Another reason is deteriorating mental health. If your patient is diagnosed with depression, anxiety or psychosis, it is good to consider putting him or her inside a facility. Patients that have Alzheimer disease will be cared for in special units for people with serious memory problems.

Some also choose to acquire the services of a convalescent home due to financial problems. Patients that need round the clock medical help can be taken care of in these facilities with more or less the same quality as hospital care. Rather than being confined in a hospital and accumulating very expensive hospital bills, a nursing facility is a good option.

Once you and your family have made the decision of putting your elderly in a home, the next step is to choose a facility that offers the best assistance for your loved one. There are a lot of nursing homes all over the country, each boasting about the services they can offer. The real task is to find which ones are really dedicated.

Consider the location of the facility. It should be not quite far away from the family so that you can always get in touch. It is also better if it is located in a warm community where the residents can live without feeling outcasts. A home that is located near a hospital is a good choice, so that the patient can be admitted right away in case of medical emergencies.

Visit the building unannounced. See if the surroundings are clean and if it is noisy. Check if the rooms really provide comfort. The best time to visit is during mealtime on a weekend. This way you will see the actual living conditions of the residents in the facility.

Aside from taking to the marketing people, go and chat with staff members and residents. These are the people who get to experience life in the nursing home first hand. Cheerful and happy looking patients are a good sign. Ask the staff how long they have worked in the facility. If most answers are less than six months, this means you have to go look for another one.

Sending the ones you love away is never easy. Sometimes you will need to battle with feelings of guilt and indecision. Keep in mind, though, that sometimes a home could be a good option. Just make sure that the home where you entrust the safekeeping of your beloved will be able to fulfill the needs of your patient while they are not with you.
